Eternal Champion Paladin, aka My Houserules to Make Paladins Not Annoying as Fuck

Image
I've been studying AD&D and toying around with the extra classes with the goal of incorporating them into my OD&D/Holmes games. For some of the extra classes, it's taken a little bit of tweaking - Rangers are any Neutral alignment instead of any Good alignment, for instance. Paladin got a bit more complicated, because at first glance, Paladin doesn't have a place at all in the sort of morally ambiguous, cutthroat-style games I run. I mean, they're required to be fucking Lawful Good, for fuck's sake! So I made my own modified paladin that's geared towards Moorcockian alignment and the Law-vs-Chaos struggle I'm much more interested in than.  Eternal Champion Paladin  Level Titles 1: Blade 2: Lamenter 3: Mourner 4: Hawk 5: Fate-Tinged 6: Threshold Guardian 7: Soldier of Balance 8: Interstice Warden 9: Eternal Champion The basic restriction of the Paladin are modified slightly for an Eternal Champion Paladin.  The restrictions on magic items are retaine

'Minimum Viable' D&D, and a handful of regular updates

My wife (who has been referred to in the past as 'R' here) and I were at my parents' house for a few days over the holidays because of water outages in our apartment due to shitty-ass weather and I was craving D&D but didn't have any polyhedrals or books or anything with me, so I threw together the basics of a very simple version of D&D - like, what I'd call minimum viable D&D, designed for one-shot play pretty exclusively, with sessions being limited to maybe 2-3 hours. It just uses d6s, since that was all we had on hand. I even threw together a basic dungeon generator to mitigate the fact that I was too tired to write an adventure (and didn't have a notebook with me to write it in) and didn't have any modules on hand to run. I ended up not getting the chance to use it then - we had plans to play it the next day and then the water came back that night so we were able to go home and life went back to normal, but I'm fairly proud of what I th

After a long break because of the extreme heat, we're finally back on our old shit. And this actually turned out to be the final session of the Mosna campaign (which we hadn't planned, but it was such a perfect ending that we decided to call it there). Next week I'll be running a Call of Cthulhu 2nd Edition one-shot, and soon we'll be starting a Traveller campaign that E is running.  But anyway, one with the story: We picked up where we'd left off. Asenath passed out upstairs in bed with Julianne after the fistfight with the Roughnecks, Felicity asleep in a chair, depressed during the wake. While they were asleep in the early morning hours, the Roughnecks snuck into the house. Most of them wore rabbit masks, and the leader wore a fox mask. They were all armed (the grunts with sticks, a few higher-ups with knives and swords), and they knocked Felicity and Isidor Wake out cold so they couldn't interfere. They crept up the stairs and grabbed Julianne out of bed an

After a hiatus of a couple of months where we played a one-shot that ballooned into a mini-campaign run by E for R's birthday, we finally got back to lotfp. It was a slightly calmer, less eventful session, but it was a lot of fun and there's lots of total madness to come in the near future.  So anyway: We picked up where we'd left off - with Asenath, Felicity, and Porphyria stumbling back into town naked and hung-over, Asenath beaten shitless and recently raped. They decided to go to Felicity's house, since there's good food there, a big bed, and a big bathtub.  When they got there, they found countless people of various ages and genders passed out naked in Ooms' living room, and Ooms holed up in the bathroom, sitting in an empty tub, naked, writing feverishly, ranting about how he'd finished his play - The King in Yellow - and would be starting rehearsals soon. Felicity congratulated him, then Ooms noticed that she was naked and accompanied by two naked wo

The morning of the harvest festival, everyone woke up early. While unconscious for three days, Irnessa had been having bizarre, extremely detailed dreams of the underwater city of Yol'ngul, punctuated by an extreme longing for the sea. She awoke with a firm drive to visit Yol'ngul and learn of the people there - her people, as she'd recently learned. She wandered the city, thinking about the whole situation, and about how alone she felt with no real friends she can even completely communicate with, and ended up sitting on a bench near the Temple of the Salt Nymphs - a pseudo-Dionysian Roman temple ruin situated on a mostly dried-up lake that had once been the central point of Vohlespil. She waved to a salt nymph who was sunning herself naked on a rock, and watched her for a while. At first thinking that the salt nymph was a human, she slowly started to notice her non-human characterstics - all of which she herself shared. Slightly pointed ears, mostly hidden by the salt ny

The next morning, Thomas seemed to be in his early 30s, holed up in the study, surrounded by books. Asenath went to talk to him, and told him that she fears that if he keeps aging the way he does, he'll be dead before the week is out. Thomas told her that he has the same worry, and that he's been trying to research anything that might help him. Asenath told him that she'd heard rumours of an artifact rumoured to be in the Old Wake Homestead out in the swamp that could possibly help - a shining ten-sided gem that allegedly contained a spirit that could work miracles. Thomas told her that he thought a miracle was all that could help, and Asenath cooked breakfast for her family and friends. Isidor Wake warned Asenath and Co. about the poisonous water in the swamp, begging Asenath to be careful. Asenath promised him she would. After breakfast, Asenath, Faye, and Araxie set out for the Old Wake Homestead. They skirted around the mountain and found their way into the swamp throug
